Notes on Veggie Burgers

  • All the burgers on this list are plant-based.
  • 4 oz of veggie burger equals 1 protein serving. Depending on the brand, sometimes this is more than one patty, sometimes this is exactly one patty, and sometimes this is less than one patty. Weigh before cooking or use the weight listed on the packaging.
  • Different brands of veggie burgers have different ratios of protein, grain, and veggies, but the reduction in the quantity from 6 oz (for a serving of beans) to 4 oz (for a serving of veggie burgers) accounts for this variation. You don’t need to worry about the exact composition and ratios of veggie burgers being perfect.
  • Some of these brands have a little bit of flour or sweetener, but all are after the first 3 ingredients. As always, know yourself and what can be triggering for you. Sugar and flour are marked with red in each of the ingredients lists below so that you can decide for yourself what allowances you are comfortable with.

    • Teriyaki Burger: Avoid this one. It has flour as the third ingredient: sweet potato, vital wheat gluten, brown rice flour, edamame, soy sauce, brown rice, barley, carrots, sesame seeds, bell peppers, quinoa, onion, cane sugar, water, green onion, celery, flax seeds, sesame oil, spices, nutritional yeast, ginger puree, rice vinegar, sake mirin, seaweed, garlic.

    • BBQ Burger: Avoid this one, it’s got sweet BBQ sauce.

  • Ingredients List: Tofu, soybeans, nigari (magnesium chloride, a natural firming agent) canola oil, onion, carrot, kale, tapioca starch, salt, garlic powder


Veggie Burgers to Avoid or Eat With Caution

The following brands of Veggie Burgers are more highly processed and contain sugar or flour. I will eat these on occasion (if there are no other options), but I have a preference for the less processed brands listed above.

  • MorningStar – DANGER! The first several ingredients are various types of flour.
  • Gardein Burgers – Nothing in the first 3 ingredients, but they are pretty processed and contain a fair amount of flour, sugar, and refined starches later on in the ingredients lists. Use at your own risk.
  • Gardenburger – Contains cane syrup and sugar, although not in the first 3 ingredients. I steer clear of them anyway because there are a lot of hard to pronounce ingredients. Use at your own risk.
  • Boca Burgers – No explicit sugar or flour, but highly processed. It’s hard to know exactly what is in these things. Use at your own risk.
  • 365 Everyday Value Meatless Burgers – Cane sugar is the 4th ingredient, and includes lots of highly processed soy. Use at your own risk.
  • Beyond Meat Beast Burgers – Delicious, vegan, and meaty, but highly processed. No explicit sugar or flour, but most of the ingredients are mysterious. Use at your own risk.
