Speaking (and Seeking) Our Truths

Hi dear friends,

I have a new intention for 2019 that I want to tell you about. And a bit of a confession.

I have recently become aware that I haven’t always been showing up truthfully and authentically. Lately, I have been watching myself censoring my food journal and my meal photos when texting with my buddies or sharing publicly on social media. And something about that hasn’t felt right.

But the thing is, I haven’t been out of integrity at all with myself. In fact, I have never felt more clarity or peace around my food and my weight than I do right now. I’ve just felt unable to be honest with other people about the modifications I’ve made to my eating since my boot camp and weight loss days.

I shared this with one of my dear friends who has been on a similar path as me, and she asked me the wise and powerful question: “What would happen if you showed up fully and truthfully? How would it feel to do that?” 

Wow, that gave me a lot to think about. At first I felt irritated and defensive at being asked that question, which I recognized right away as a red flag that there was something there to unpack.

I’ve spent a lot of energy trying to protect other people. I worry a lot about the potential negative impact that my site and my content could have on somebody in recovery who is more highly susceptible to sugar and flour than I am and really shouldn’t be using recipes. I censor myself because I am afraid of triggering others. It had never occurred to me it might actually benefit other people, and myself, to be fully honest. What a radical idea.

In thinking about that over the past few days, I’ve come to the conclusion that I am not responsible for other people. Other people have the responsibility of taking care of themselves and knowing what serves them and what doesn’t. 

So, what would happen if I showed up fully and truthfully?

I have no idea, but I’ve decided to do it anyway.

I have a new intention to fully show up and claim and speak my truths. Not what I think other people need to hear, but what is actually true for me. I feel a deep sense of relief just writing out those words.

I’ve created a private facebook group called Seeking Our Truths for those who want to engage in further dialogue and support around exploring what is true for you and what serves you, whether that includes bright lines, mindful eating, intuitive eating, or any other kind of eating. I intend it to be a loving space for people to share the twists and turns in their journeys and run their experiments without any judgement.

I want to embody the idea that when we strive to be our truest, most authentic self in this world, we naturally attract the people that will support and nourish us the most.

So as we move into 2019, I invite you to think about where in your life you might be holding yourself back, or censoring yourself. What would it feel like to show up authentically? What might happen? What potential for creativity and leadership would emerge?

  2. I am one of the people who could benefit from your sharing. Some time ago, when you first mentioned modifying your bright lines, it made me curious and more interested in staying with BLE. Rather than giving up on it or feeling that I’m always failing, I’d like to create the Bright lines that work for me and follow them faithfully. Hoping that joining the Facebook group might help me create a plan that works for me.

  5. Oh Katie, your greatest gift to me has been in presenting YOUR truths and adventures from a BLE foundation . I have much more peace around my food journey because you had the courage and generosity to shine a light where I needed to see a wider perspective. I always feel free to “take what I want, and leave the rest” so I can have MY authentic experience.
    P.S. Hope you’re able to attend the Portland’s Brightest gathering today! I’d love to see you again.

     
  6. Happy Sunday my dear Katie. I am one who needs and genuinely appreciates your authentic posts. I like recipes. They allow me to do BLE. I need honesty in how people do maintenance as I “modify” and am curious as to what works for others. I’ve learned maintenance is not a clear as JFTFP in weight loss. In the end, I’ll create my own maintenance plan, but hearing how others do it helps me with my creation. So thank you sweet Katie.

    I would like to join, but it’s telling me it’s restricted and won’t show me anything.

    I have a terrible time with BLE due to my own issues, but am feeling extremely pushed to “tough it out” regardless of how miserable I am.

    And miserable isn’t sustainable.

    Thank-you! This is what I’ve been searching for! I just told my group Saturday, that I feel like a BL phony, a lone wanderer without a home! I lost over 70 pounds last year & have been in maintenance since September. Since then I have put on my lab coat and been trying to find my truths, they look different at times than my BL friends hanging on to strict lines, & I feel like I have to apologize constantly that my needs are different. It’s kinda lonely, but when I see you mostly living BL, with different variations, it gives me hope, and I want to know more about how you blend it all together and keep peace! I have watched you from the beginning & been inspired to create beautiful food. I love your thoughts that you share, and ideas… it inspires me! I want to join you on this journey of exploration, because what you say speaks to my heart! I will find the Facebook group and join now. Thanks for all you do! Lori

  11. Hi Katie~ I, for one, love your recipes and am open to seeing them even if I have to modify them a tad to fit my specific food plan. Golly we live in a world of massive food cues and I feel that in maintenance we all have to step out of the comfort zone and really develop a lifestyle that is enduring. Because of your blog, I was willing to try a few foods in maintenance that were not in my original weight loss plan and I THANK you for posting your truth because you gave me the courage to go ahead and explore within “limits”. Thank you so much Katie…you are one of my BLE gems!!!

  14. I’m a brand new BLE bootcamper. I just received the cookbook that I ordered from you…it’s beautiful and inspiring.
    I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. 🙂 You did the plan and then found your equilibrium in maintenance, so, when you experiment you’ll get pretty fast feedback in your weight. Whereas I could change things up and still lose. Not getting any insight about if the change is good for me or not. You have some time under your belt paying attention to your peace of mind too, so that is good.
    I think it sounds wonderful for you to figure out where you go from here!
    I love looking around your page, so I selfishly hope your new food journey doesn’t make it too confusing for newbies like me.
    Thank you for developing and sharing your recipes. You saved me from thinking I was going to be eating night after night of sad dry chicken and broccoli!

    • Hey Melissa, I actually archived the group because nobody was posting in it. That’s ok though, I’ve been finding beautiful support elsewhere. I hope you find some too.
