A lot of folks have been asking me for oil-free recipes lately. Here’s a delicious, creamy, oil-free hummus recipe that comes together in less than 10 minutes in a high powered blender (such as a Vitamix).
I’ve always made hummus in a food processor, but the blender took this hummus to the next level. So smooth and creamy!! And highly customizable for your favorite hummus flavorings. Enjoy!
Ingredients
- 2 cans chickpeas (15-oz) liquid reserved from one can
- 3 garlic cloves
- 2 Tbsp tahini
- 3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice not bottled!
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp salt
Flavoring Ideas
- za'atar seasoning
- smoked paprika
- roasted red pepper (I use jarred)
- cilantro and jalapeño
- roasted eggplant and pine nuts
- chipotle and lime
- spinach and artichoke hearts
- olives
Instructions
- Drain one can of chickpeas and add both cans (including the liquid from the second can into a food processor or high powered blender such as a Vitamix.
- Add the rest of the ingredients and blend. If using a high powered blender, start on low and use the stirring tool to mix while blending, or stop blending and mix periodically with a spatula, until creamy.
Notes

Can this recipe be halved?
I haven’t tried it, but I don’t see why not. I think a high powered blended like a vitamix could handle it. My only concern would be the more volume the better for it getting sucked down into the blades of the blender. Try it and let us know!
This is my absolute go to now! I love this recipe and make it once a week. I have substituted 1 can of great northern beans for one of the can of garbanzo beans too. I love the Tahini in this and it is the perfect consistency! It takes about 30 seconds to mix up in my new PC cooking blender! LOVE!
How long does it last?
As long as regular hummus, maybe a week?
What’s a good combination of add ins? I really like Hope brand Buffalo Bleu hummus. Any suggestions? Thanks Melissa
I’d say look at the ingredients list and flavors on brands of hummus you know that you like. I love them all. You really can’t go wrong.
